Orange

As a part of the citrus family, oranges are known for their intense color and sweet, yet tangy, juicy interior, making them a popular fruit choice around the world. The orange is typically cultivated in warm regions, and its history dates back for more than a thousand years to southeastern Asia.

Only 20 percent of the world’s orange crops are sold as whole fruit, while the remaining 80% is processed for orange juice and other orange flavored products.

Florida and Brazil are two regions that produce a large portion of the world’s orange supply.  In fact, one study reports that cranberries contain more antioxidant phenols than 19 other commonly eaten fruits.5

Oranges come in several different varieties that include sweet, mandarin, sour, and tangerine. The most important varieties in Brazil are the Pera Rio and the Pera Natal 6. Florida provides different oranges; namely, the Hamlin, Parson Brown and Pineapple.  Valencia oranges are shared by both regions.7

Overall, Brazil produces the largest amount of oranges and grapefruits in the world.8 In Brazil, orange season typically runs from June to February.  In Florida, oranges are usually processed from late October to early June.9 Brazilian oranges tend to be smaller, less round and have a thicker peel than oranges grown in Florida.10

Aside from their refreshing flavor and distinct taste, oranges are one of the most nutrient-dense fruits. They contain phytonutrients, which are nourishing components that occur naturally in certain plants. Oranges contain essential nutrients such as Vitamin C and folate.  Vitamin C is an antioxidant that has many functions such as the promotion of healthy skin and gums and the ability to increase iron absorption.11 Folate is important in fetal development and in making healthy red blood cells.

Orange juice is also naturally sodium free and is a good source of potassium.  Diets containing foods low in sodium and with good sources of potassium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.  Orange juice provides a high level of nutrients and is an easy way to help you add a serving of fruit to the day.
